I adore my large family
So! I am a mother, wife, friend and confidant, at least I hope so. I am a draftsman turned biologist, an artist, an amateur carpenter, and an avid DIY enthusiast. I love the outdoors and my garden. Who am I kidding? My husband is a landscaper and the garden is mostly his baby. I have ideas and input privileges but he's the one that makes them come to life, so to speak. So the garden is ours at best, but I love it.
I also love spending time with my friends and family. I am lucky enough to have a large family that is close. We are an Italian family, well the stereo typical one. You know, extremely loud, hotblooded, with every kind of emotion you can think of surfacing each time we meet. We mostly spend our time together in the kitchen making and eating good food. We have drama and (did I mention we're loud?), we are in each other's business way too much. We fight and make up, and most of all if something happens to one of us everybody is there to help. But the kicker is, we don't come from lovely Italy. We come far, far, far away. We're the Italians of the north. Like "winter is coming" north.
It will all work out in the end
You see, I was born and raised in Reykjavik, Iceland, but now I live just outside Aalborg in Denmark on an organic farm (live on it, we don't own it). I moved out here in my late thirties to go to university, which isn't all that uncommon where I come from. We Icelanders like to walk to our own beat sometimes, and don't conform to the norm in many ways. We have a saying that we live by "Þetta reddast" which translates to "It'll all work out". Meaning that even if things go to shit and all hope is lost, we believe that things will work out in the end. Crazy right? Well, surviving the elements on an isolated island in the middle of the northern Atlantic ocean, dealing with volcanoes, earthquakes, mudslides, and the ever unpredictable and often harsh weather, can do that to people.
What else? Yes, It took me a minute to find out what I wanted to do in life and after 5 years in university I finally graduated in 2017 as a cand.scient in biology. This means that I have a degree in something that should make it easy to find my way on how to live environmentally responsibly, but to tell you the truth I am far from flawless in that regard. I am trying though and that is all any of us can do. I am willing to accept that I can and should do better and this is a part of that. Don't worry, I will not paint a saint-like picture of dos and don'ts but rather we together will help each other find a path we can walk. I'll share what little knowledge I have on the subject. I am no oracle but I promise to give you my best.
So, my name is Helena Sif and I am an Icelander living in rural Denmark. I hope you'll come with me on this adventure and I promise you this will be interesting at the very least, and I have a feeling some of my lovely friends or crazy family members (I love them though) will make an appearance, and trust me when I say, just that will be worth it.
